As of the first half of the Wednesday trading session, October 14, 2026, spot gold trades around $4,140/oz, continuing a reversal from the 4,200 area reached on Monday. The precious metal cannot benefit from the softer dollar and falling Treasury yields because the market is frozen waiting for the key US inflation report that will determine the Fed's policy path. Technical indicators show mounting bearish momentum, and the 4,150 level, which acted as support yesterday, has now turned into resistance.

Gold is falling for a third consecutive session. After a failed attempt to break the top of the monthly trading range near 4,230 earlier in the week, the metal dropped below 4,150, reaching intraday lows around 4,130–4,140. The US dollar index USDX retreated from the 18-month high hit on Monday near 102.50–102.55 to around 102.20–102.25 (currently), but that did not help gold to secure a foothold above key levels.

Key drivers

Fed expectations remain the main obstacle. According to CME FedWatch, markets price roughly an 80% chance of no change at the October meeting, while the probability of a December hike stands at 80–90%, and another hike in Q1 2027 at about 17–19%.

New York Fed president John Williams said on Tuesday the central bank may need one more hike this year but confirmed he sees no need for further increases in 2027. Those comments contradict market pricing for at least two hikes next year.

Inflation is accelerating because of energy. The consensus CPI forecast for September expects headline inflation to accelerate to 3.6–3.7% year-on-year from 3.4% in August, while core inflation is seen at 2.4–2.5%. The main driver is energy prices: Brent averaged $114/bbl in September versus $91 in August, and the US average gasoline price reached $4.33/gal, 50 cents above the prior September 2023 record. Societe Generale highlights that diesel explains roughly 70% of US inflation surprises, making the energy transmission channel especially important.

Geopolitics supports a risk premium but does not save gold. Houthi attacks on Saudi targets continue, and US-Iran talks on reopening the Strait of Hormuz remain deadlocked. High borrowing costs push investors toward yield-bearing assets, which limits demand for gold even amid geopolitical tensions.

The short-term technical picture remains bearish. XAU/USD failed to break the top of the monthly range near 4,230.00 and turned down, forming a sequence of lower highs.

- The RSI (14) on the 4-hour chart fell below the key 50 level, hinting at weakening bull pressure. On the daily chart the indicator is also losing momentum, sliding toward 42, leaving room for further decline without oversold signals.

- Stochastic on D1 exited the oversold zone and now signals selling.

- EMA50, 144, and 200: price trades below the 50-period EMA, located near 4,260.00. The 144-period EMA sits near 4,325.00, and the 200-period EMA runs through the psychological 4,300.00 level, creating layered resistance to any recovery. The nearest support level lies in the 4,080.00–4,100.00 zone, coinciding with key demand (per Supertrend).

Key events to watch

Wednesday, October 14, 12:30 GMT — US CPI for September. This is the main macro trigger of the week. Consensus: headline inflation 3.6–3.7% y/y, core 2.4–2.5% y/y, monthly prints 0.6% and 0.2%, respectively. If core CPI exceeds 0.3% m/m, markets may price a higher probability of a December rate hike, which would strengthen the dollar and pressure gold. If the data disappoints, a rebound to 4,190.00–4,200.00 is possible.

Thursday, October 15, 12:30 GMT — US PPI for September. Consensus: 0.5% m/m and 5.4% y/y, above the prior read. Core PPI is expected at 0.3% m/m and 4.5% y/y. Retail sales and initial jobless claims will also be released that day.

Friday, October 16—Fed speakers, including post-CPI/PPI commentary. Markets will also watch bond yields: if 10-year yields hold below 5.20%, that could indirectly support gold.

October 28–29 — FOMC meeting. According to CME FedWatch, markets put roughly an 80% chance on no change. Any deviation would be a powerful catalyst for gold.

Conclusion and recommendations

Gold remains vulnerable, squeezed between Fed hawkish expectations and structural support from central banks. The key level for bulls is 4200.00; for bears it is 4100.00.

For short-term traders:

- Consider short entries on a sustained break of 4,130.00 with targets at 4,100.00, 4,080.00–4,020.00, and a stop-loss above 4,169.00 (H1 200-EMA).

- Consider long entries on a break of resistance 4,169.00–4,180.00 or on a sustained rebound from 4,100.00 with targets at 4,190.00–4,200.00; note resistance here may require additional impetus to clear.

- Monitor US CPI (October 14) closely—this is the key trigger.

For medium-term investors:

- A potential correction to 4,080.00–4,020.00 could be used to cautiously add longs while maintaining a constructive view on structural demand from central banks and institutional investors.

- Some economists expect part of gold's recent weakness could reverse by year-end if energy markets stabilize.

Risk management:

- Account for elevated volatility around inflation releases and Fed meetings.

- Use strict stop-losses, especially when trading breakouts of key levels.

- Watch bond yields and the dollar and energy prices.
